- Heat olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add diced onion, red bell pepper, and jalapeño, then sauté for 4 to 5 minutes until softened.
- Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- Add ground turkey, breaking it apart with a spoon, and cook for 5 to 7 minutes until browned and no longer pink.
- Mix in chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, oregano, black pepper, salt, and cayenne pepper if using. Cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly to release the spices' aroma.
- Add diced tomatoes with juices, tomato paste, black beans, and chicken or vegetable broth. Stir thoroughly to combine all ingredients.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Simmer uncovered for an additional 5 to 10 minutes to thicken, if desired.
- Serve hot, topped with optional cilantro, green onions, avocado, or lime wedges to taste.
