Red White Blue Ice Cubes (Printable Version)

Layered red, white and blue ice cubes with blueberries, coconut and strawberries to brighten summer drinks.

# Ingredient List:

→ Fruit

01 - 1/2 cup fresh or frozen blueberries
02 - 1/2 cup strawberries, hulled and chopped
03 - 1/2 cup fresh coconut meat or unsweetened shredded coconut

→ Liquids

04 - 1 cup coconut water
05 - 1 cup natural blueberry juice
06 - 1 cup natural strawberry juice or cranberry juice

# Step-by-Step Instructions:

01 - Rinse blueberries and strawberries thoroughly. Hull and chop the strawberries into small pieces. Ensure coconut meat is cut into small cubes, or measure out shredded coconut as needed.
02 - Place a few blueberries into the bottom third of each compartment in an ice cube tray. Pour enough blueberry juice to just cover the blueberries. Freeze for approximately 1 hour or until the layer is solid.
03 - Add a layer of coconut meat or sprinkle shredded coconut over the set blueberry layer. Pour coconut water to fill the next third of each compartment. Freeze for another hour until firm.
04 - Top each compartment with chopped strawberries. Fill to the top with strawberry juice or cranberry juice. Freeze until completely solid, about 2 additional hours.
05 - Carefully remove the fully frozen cubes from the tray. Use immediately to chill lemonade, sparkling water, or cocktails to add festive color and flavor.

# Tips from hearthlykitchen:

01 -
  • The way these cubes bloom into drinks feels like a fireworks show for your glass.
  • It’s an effortless way to make everyone feel like you went the extra mile, with almost no fuss.
02 -
  • I once rushed the freezing and ended up with smudged colors—always let each layer freeze fully or they’ll blur together.
  • Switching up the juice flavors changes the vibe entirely, especially with tart cranberry for the red.
03 -
  • Leave a little space in each compartment to account for the extra volume from fruit and juices expanding as they freeze.
  • Chill your drinks before adding the cubes so they don’t melt too quickly and dilute the flavors.
